An investigation was conducted in the greenhouse and an environmental chamber to examine the impact of 6 soil moistures (saturation (200%), 85%, 70%, 55%, 40%, and 25% of saturation) on the life cycle and/or behavior of the Lesser cornstalk borer. Also, environmental chamber investigation were conducted to examine the oviposition preferences of moths among several colors of substrate. Further investigations using a Y tube olfactometer were made to examine smokeattractiveness to Lesser cornstalk borer moths. The parameters of the Lesser cornstalk borer life cycle most affected by soil moisture were found to be oviposition behavior of adults. hatching of eggs, survuval and escape response oy young larvae. No effect of soil moisture was found on older larvae or on the pupal stage. A quadratic response was found between soil moisture and the ratio of eggs hatched, and a linear and positive relationship between the number of larvae emerged and soil moisture. Substrate color did not affect selection of an oviposition site by moths. Smoke was found to attact moths. Also ash smell was found to attract moths in Y-tube olfactometer tests. |
